Mental toughness

How we respond to challenge, pressure and change has a significant impact on how we lead, perform and develop. Mental Toughness provides a practical, evidence-based framework for understanding those differences — and what we can do about them.

What is Mental Toughness?

Mental Toughness is a personality trait that helps explain how we respond mentally when faced with challenge, stress, pressure and opportunity.

It doesn't measure whether someone is "tough" or "weak". We all respond differently, and those differences can influence how confident we feel, how we approach challenges, how persistent we are and how much control we feel we have.

The framework gives us a language for understanding those differences — and, importantly, deciding whether the way we currently respond is helping or getting in the way.

The four areas of Mental Toughness

  • Control

How much influence you feel you have over what happens, including how you manage your emotions.

  • Commitment

How you approach goals and whether you persist when things become difficult or distracting.

  • Challenge

How you respond to change, uncertainty, setbacks and opportunities to learn.

  • Confidence

Your belief in your abilities and your confidence when dealing with other people.

Why does Mental Toughness matter?

Mental Toughness can influence how we respond when the pressure increases, plans change or things don't go as expected.

Understanding your own pattern can help you recognise why some situations energise you while others drain you, why you respond differently from colleagues, and where your natural approach may sometimes get in the way.

For leaders and teams, that can be particularly useful when thinking about:

  • Handling pressure and uncertainty
  • Confidence in difficult situations
  • Responding to change and setbacks
  • Staying focused on goals
  • Working effectively with people who respond differently

The aim isn't to become more mentally tough. It's to understand your own response and use that insight more effectively.

Understanding your Mental Toughness profile

I use the MTQ assessment to help individuals and teams understand how they typically respond to challenge, pressure and change.

The assessment produces a personal profile across the four areas of Control, Commitment, Challenge and Confidence, as well as the eight factors within them.

The value isn't simply in receiving a score or report. It's in making sense of what the results mean for you — where your natural approach helps you and where it might sometimes get in the way.

I use the profile as the starting point for a conversation, helping you turn the results into practical insight you can use in your role.

It's about understanding yourself better, not putting you in a box.

How I use Mental Toughness

I use Mental Toughness in a number of ways, depending on what an individual, team or organisation is trying to achieve.

It can form part of executive coaching, leadership development or team development, or be used as a focused piece of work in its own right.

Typically, this might include:

  • Individual MTQ assessments with one-to-one feedback
  • Leadership team profiles and facilitated team sessions
  • Mental Toughness workshops and development programmes
  • Using the framework alongside executive coaching
  • Helping organisations understand patterns across groups of leaders

The assessment provides the insight. The important part is what you do with it.
